You can’t miss the sight of Land’s End in Cabo, Mexico, nor should you miss taking a closer look at this fabulous landmark by enjoying a day trip by boat. Land’s End is the English name given to the famed rock formation, El Arco that adorns Cabo San Lucas’ coastline. It is the most popular feature on postcards and billboards promoting Cabo and is a must-see thing to do in Cabo.
How to get there
If you have time for a day trip in your busy schedule of Cabo San Lucas activities, then it is worth taking an organized tour or arriving by your own steam by water taxi (some have glass bottoms). Tours can include a range of different activities, including snorkeling, diving, motorized water sports and can even include food and beverages, depending on the tour company you choose. If you like to be a more independent, it is easy to charter a yacht or fishing trip that includes a stop off at El Arco. Water taxis will also take you to the beaches of Land’s End and you can pre-arrange a pick up. Water taxis and yacht charters leave from Cabo San Lucas Marina.
What can you do at El Arco?
Once you have arrived at Land’s End, there are a couple of beaches to enjoy. What is impressive about these beaches is that they are the only place in the world where you can swim in both an ocean and sea as El Arco marks the point where the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez merge. There are two curiously named beaches, Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach joined by a quaint cave. Lover’s Beach is recommended for swimming, wading and snorkeling while the sea at Divorce Beach should not be entered due to its dangerous tides.
History of the Name
How El Arco got its name in English has an interesting explanation. It is said that if you were to travel south as the crow flies from Land’s End in Mexico, you would not hit land until you came to the South Pole – hence, you have reached the end of the land at Cabo San Lucas. The Spanish name, El Arco or “the Arch” is pretty self explanatory when you see how the ocean and sea have carved this rock formation.
